Radiocarbon Dating Prices & Payment Terms
The facility operates a modified National Electrostatics Corporation kV 1. This allows for high precision measurements of small individual samples and reduces the need for bulk or mixed materials to generate sufficient carbon for measurements. Radiocarbon Laboratory Staff : Our staff has extensive experience using radiocarbon in diverse fields including archaeology, paleontology, paleoecology, and climate reconstruction; collaborating on interdisciplinary projects with results published in Science, Nature Geoscience, PNAS, Quaternary Science Reviews and Quaternary Research, among others.
Our interdisciplinary focus allows us to help researchers in developing research designs, sampling strategies, and analysis of radiocarbon data at every stage of their projects from conception to conclusion. Home Facilities. Contact for this facility:.
Radiocarbon dating: radioactive carbon decays to nitrogen with a half-life of years. In dead material, the decayed 14C is not replaced and its concentration.
As the province starts to loosen COVID related restrictions, the University of Ottawa has put in place a plan to gradually resume operations in its research laboratories. To maintain a safe and healthy environment for our personnel, lab capacity has been limited and processing times may be longer than usual. We thank you for your continued patience, do not hesitate to contact us with any questions. Please review our Water Sampling Protocol. Physical and chemical pre-treatments vary depending on the type of material and the depositional environment from which it came.
Below is a list of commonly dated materials, the factors that should be taken into account when selecting material, and the pre-treatment methods that the samples will undergo prior to radiocarbon dating. If your samples have been treated with conservation products e. Please select your sample material s below for more details regarding collection and preparation. Always send clean and dry bone samples as damp samples may contain mold which can cause deterioration of the collagen.
Please pre-screen bone samples prior to shipping to the lab. Bone samples can fail to produce collagen if the collagen has been degraded or the bone has been charred. Since collagen holds the inorganic part of the bone together, the easiest way to test for suitability is to try to scrape the bone with a scalpel or snap the bone by hand. If the bone is friable and easy to scrape or snap for the exception of small ribs or bird bones , the collagen has likely been degraded.
Where bones fail to produce collagen in the lab, we will try a second time.

AMS research journals fall under two models of open access, green and gold:. The AMS considers any version of the paper up to the final peer-reviewed manuscript including revisions that take into account comments and suggestions of referees to be a prepublication version. In this model, there are no processing fees and the article is included in a subscription journal.
Please be informed that the Miami radiocarbon lab will be closed during these with the lab, access results, and receive up-to-date prices and other information. With. Radiocarbon dating laboratory Beta Analytic has transferred its Taiwan.
Subscriptions are accepted for the calendar year only. Back issue prices are available upon request. Access to online journal content older than 12 months is available free of charge at AMS Journals Online. All subscriptions include access to the online content. Subscribers interested in activating the online portion of their subscription must execute an online subscription agreement. Only claims that are received up to 90 days for U. All requests for replacement issues must be submitted in writing.
Claims will not be accepted over the phone. A complete ship to address, order number, and payment information for each subscription should be provided with all claims. All address changes for a subscription must be submitted as soon as possible and must include the new address as well as the original address. A refund or credit will be provided only if a cancellation request is received prior to the shipment of the first issue.
AMS shares the concern of the library community with respect to the long-term integrity and accessibility of scholarly journal content and is, therefore, a participating member of both LOCKSS and Portico.
ICA opened its doors in to help satisfy the growing need for affordable radiocarbon dating analysis with a fast turn-around. Since opening, ICA has dated thousands of carbon samples for hundreds of clients from all over the world. We understand that in radiocarbon dating, each sample is unique.
Typically, this is NZD for pretreatment and NZD for pretreatment and combustion, but charges may vary depending on the sample type. Please read our.
The laboratory is now reopened with reduced staff numbers and physical distancing. Turnaround times will be revised once the effect of these measures in practice are known. In addition to taking an active part in a number of research projects , the laboratory carries out age measurements under contract to Historic Environment Scotland. We also provide a radiocarbon dating service to national museums, academic staff in a large number of universities worldwide, and many UK and European commercial archaeology units.
The laboratory can provide advice on sample selection, full sample pretreatment and graphite target preparation, stable isotope measurement, 14 C analysis at the SUERC AMS Laboratory and subsequent calibration of results to the calendar timescale. If requested, the laboratory’s chronological modelling team can additionally create a Bayesian site-model.
The application of radiocarbon dating to determine the geochronology of archaeological sites is ubiquitous across the African continent. However, the method is not without limitations and this review article provides Africanist archaeologists with cautionary insights as to when, where, and how to utilize radiocarbon dates. Specifically, the review will concentrate on the potential of carbon reservoirs and recycled organic remains to inflate apparent age estimates, diagenesis of carbon isotopes in variable pH ecologies, and hot-humid climates and non-climate-controlled archives that can compromise the efficacy of samples.

Determinations of all organic carbon containing material is available, such as seeds, wood, charcoal, peat, bone and fabric but also from inorganic carbon such as carbonate of burnt bone, carbonate shells of shellfish and foraminifera. The laboratory also provides biofraction determinations from samples such as mixtures of different kinds of liquid fuel biodiesel-fossil diesel etc.
The laboratory provides luminescence dating services. It is advisable to read up on sampling beforehand, in order to avoid possible problems. For example, if luminescence dating of sediments is wanted, the protection of the sediment layers from light is highly important. Also, if reasonable, background radiation measurement of the original location of the sample is performed.
Customers are advised to contact the laboratory before sampling.

Radiocarbon dating: radioactive carbon decays to nitrogen with a half-life of years. In dead material, the decayed 14C is not replaced and its concentration in the object decreases slowly. To obtain a truly absolute chronology, corrections must be made, provided by measurements on samples of know age. The most suitable types of sample for radiocarbon dating are charcoal and well-preserved wood, although leather, cloth, paper, peat, shell and bone can also be used.
Because of the somewhat short half-life of 14C, radiocarbon dating is not applicable to samples with ages greater than about 50, years, because the remaining concentration would be too small for accurate measurement.
We will be happy to answer any questions you have. Please send us a message and one of our expert staff members will get back to you shortly! If the Express Service delivery date is not met, the submission will maintain processing priority but revert to the corresponding Standard Service rate. Note: All prices in US Dollars. No additional taxes. Upon assessment of the sample material, DirectAMS scientists may reassign a sample to a different type that more closely matches the characteristics of the sample.
This may result in higher or lower processing fees.
